Completion of the Southern African Large Telescope

The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) was completed, on budget, in November 2005, in just under 6 years, and is currently in the middle of its commissioning and performance verification phase, expected to be concluded by early 2007. SALT partners have already been obtaining observations during this shake-down period, and night time hours devoted to science time has slowly risen to 65-75%....

Advances in Reverberation Mapping

This contribution briefly reviews the reverberation mapping technique which leads to determination of black hole masses. I focus on the emerging relation between the broad-line region size and the active galactic nucleus (AGN) luminosity, and on an overview of recent results of reverberation mapping studies which are starting to cover the full AGN luminosity range. Preliminary results and time ...

Iron Line Reverberation Mapping with Constellation-x

The broad X-ray iron line seen in the spectra of many AGN is thought to originate from the inner regions of the putative black hole accretion disk, and hence provides a rare probe of that central region. In principle, future high throughput X-ray spectrometers should be able to examine the temporal response of this fluorescent line to flares in the X-ray continuum source (which energizes this e...

New Large (n, r)-arcs in PG(2, q)

An $(n, r)$-arc is a set of $n$ points of a projective plane such that some $r$, but no $r+1$ of them, are collinear. The maximum size of an $(n, r)$-arc in  $PG(2, q)$ is denoted by $m_r(2,q)$.  In this paper we present  a new $(184,12)$-arc in PG$(2,17),$  a new $(244,14)$-arc and a new $(267,15$)-arc in $PG(2,19).$
